World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Maiden, Tirah, India, he served as a Jemada (Lieutenant) in the 55th Coke's Rifles, Indian Army, attached to the 57th Wilde's Rifles, Frontier Force. On April 26, 1915, Jemadar Mir Dast led his platoon during the attack at St Jean, near Ypres, Belgium. During the engagement, he risked his life to carry eight wounded British and Indian officers to safety while exposed to very heavy fire. When no British officers were left, he collected various units of the regiment and kept them under his command until the retirement was ordered. For most prestigious gallantry, he was promoted Subadar (Captain) and awarded the Victoria Cross by King George V at the Indian Hospital, Royal Pavilion, Brighton, Sussex, England, on August 25, 1915. He died at age 70 at the Shagi Landi Kyan Village, Pakistan.
