Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Sergeant in the Union Army in Company E, 59th Massachusetts Infantry. His was awarded the Medal of Honor for action on June 17, 1864 at Petersburg, Virginia. His citation reads "Though seriously wounded in a bayonet charge and directed to go to the rear, he declined to do so, but remained with his regiment and helped to carry the breast-works."
