Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Private in Company B, 7th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery on May 3, 1863, at Marye's Heights, Fredericksburg, Virginia. His citation reads "With one companion voluntarily and with conspicuous daring advanced beyond his regiment, which had been broken in the assault, and halted beneath the crest. Following the example of these two men, the colors were brought to the summit, the regiment was advanced, and the position held."
