Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Liverpool, England, he served as a Private in the 2nd Queen's Dragoon Guards, British Army. On October 8, 1858, a group of about 40 mutinous sepoys attacked a regiment detachment commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Seymour, C.B., at Sundeela, Oudh, India. When Lieutenant Colonel Seymour was pulled from his horse by mutineers with swords, Private Anderson rushed to his rescue shooting one of the mutineers with his pistol and with the help of his comrades drove off the enemy. For gallantry in the face of the enemy and saving the life of his commanding officer, he was promoted Corporal and awarded the Victoria Cross on November 11, 1862. He died at age 72 in Seaham Harbour, England.
