U.S. Senator. He attended Princeton University, owned an oil company and was employed in the United States Postal Service at Pittsburgh, (1894-99). He was secretary of the Pittsburgh Public Utilities Company, (1899-1901) and general manager, (1901-18). During World War I, he served as a member of the War Industries Board, Petroleum Service Division and as a director in the Bureau of Sales in the Alien Property Custodian’s Office. He was a member of the Democratic National Committee, (1920-32) and elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate, serving (1934-47). After leaving the Senate, he lived in retirement until his death at age 88.
