Miriam Carleen Hackman Heusel, 92, of Mt. Pleasant, died Friday, May 24, 2013 at Sunrise Terrace, Winfield, Iowa.
Mrs. Heusel was born April 5, 1921 in Syracuse, Nebraska, the daughter of Otto Walter and Viola Ganzel Hackman. On October 21, 1949, she married Logan Heusel in Lincoln, Nebraska. He died January 28, 2011. She was raised in Lincoln and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1938 and from the University of Nebraska in 1942 with a BS degree in Textiles and Clothing. She was a member of Kappa Phi Sorority.
During World War II, she was a USO volunteer. After college, she was employed by the Veterans Administration in Lincoln and later in Denver, Colorado. After her marriage, her husband's employment with Cargill took them to Grinnell, Iowa, Rochelle, Illinois and to Mt. Pleasant where they made their home since 1964.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Mt. Pleasant and past member of the United Methodist Women. She was also a former member of American Association of University Women. She enjoyed music from a very young age. She was the pianist for her church for many years in Lincoln and accompanied many vocal groups in high school and university. She also accompanied the Rhythm Rockers for many years. She loved to read, travel and attend family reunions. She also liked to sew for herself, her sons, and her grandson.
Mrs. Heusel is survived by one son, Timothy of New London; one grandson, Joshua of Lowell; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Eric; one sister, Ardith Wybell, and one brother, James Hackman; and daughter-in-law, Julie Heusel.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, May 31, at First United Methodist Church, Mt. Pleasant. Pastor Herbert Shafer will officiate. According to her wishes, she has been cremated and private family inurnment will be in Forest Home Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant. Mrs. Heusel requested that memorials be directed to Iowa Huntington Disease Research.
