Engineer and Artist. A partner in a iron foundry, he competed a survey of the Saint John River from Fredericton, New Brunswick, to Grand Falls, New Brunswick, in 1826, designed a steam powered boat used on the Saint John River, started a school, and was one of the founders of the New Brunswick Museum. A noted inventor as well, Foulis is the true inventor of the fog horn. The first one ever was erected on Partridge Island, New Brunswick, but credit of the invention went to an American named Dobell, who patented it before Foulis could. Foulis never received any money for his invention and he died penniless and poor in 1866.
