W. Rupert Turnbull
Birth: 1870
Death: 1954

Inventor. Turnbull was an aeronautical engineer, who is noted for building the first wind tunnel in Canada in 1902 at his private laboratory in Rothesay, New Brunswick. At his lab, Turnbull collaborated with inventors such as Alexander Graham Bell and J.H. Parkin. He also invented the variable-pitch propeller, which was first tested in flight in 1927. He later licensed it for manufacture and it was used worldwide. The propeller is now on display in the National Aviation Museum in Ottawa, Ontario.  (bio by: K)
