World War I German Flying Ace, World War II German Luftwaffe General. One of the most charismatic characters of World War I, he was the second highest scoring and highest surviving German ace with a score of 62 kills. He flew with “The Red Baron” Manfred von Richthofen and was a squadron commander as well as being awarded the Pour le Merite (Germany's highest military award). After the war he was involved with aircraft production, performed barnstorming and stunt flying all over the world, flew as a stunt pilot in Hollywood motion pictures, and was a test pilot. Udet joined the Luftwaffe during World War II and eventually attained the rank of Generaloberst. He fell out of favor with Nazi German Luftwaffe commander Herman Goering, could not cope with the political in-fighting, and died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a Berlin hotel.
