He was the son of Johann Adam Bretz and Otillia Schulthiess. He immigrated with his brothers Wendel and Heinrich to America on August 15th, 1750 on the ship Royal Union. He was a farmer and a sergeant in the Revolutionary War, fighting in the battles of Trenton and Princton. He was wounded in the battle of Long Island April 23, 1781. He was one of the earliest settlers in the Lyken Valley. He was married to an Elizabeth and had the following children: Mary b 1761, married Emmanuel Duey, buried in Shoops Cemetery in Harrisburg, Pa/ Catherine b. 1763, married Christian Wirt,/ Elizabeth b. 1765 married Henry Bomgardner/ Susan b. 1770 married Henry Meck/ John b. 1771 married Catherine Fox/ Ludwig b. 1773 married Ann Moyer/ Magdalena married Robert Dunbar.
