Von Bülow was born into a Prussian military family. Von Bülow fought in the wars of 1866 and 1870/71. Von Bülow became commander of the 2 Army during the beginning of World War I. The 2 Army fought at St. Quentin, Charleroi, and the Battle of the Marne. Von Bülow was appointed to General Field Marshall. However, in April 1915, he retired due to illness.
