US Navy Peacetime Medal of Honor Recipient. A native of Ireland, he was issued the award for his actions as a landsman assigned to the Navy corvette USS Quinnebaug on March 13, 1879, near Port Mahon, Minorca, Spain. His Medal of Honor citation reads: "For rescuing from drowning a shipmate from the U.S.S. Quinnebaug, at Port Mahon, Minorca, 13 March 1879."
