New Mexico Territorial Governor. Associated with the Missouri Fur Company in the 1820s, on a trapping-trading expedition, Bent captained a caravan to New Mexico Territory in 1829. In 1830, he established a business relationship with the Ceran St. Vrain Company handling trades in New Mexico. Recognized as one of the leading trappers and traders in the New Mexico Santa Fe region, he established trade with western Plains and certain mountain tribes, by the mid-1830s. In September, 1846, Bent was named the first civil U.S. Governor of New Mexico Territory. Due to the negative attitude surrounding the Mexican American War, many of the inhabitants of New Mexico were not satisfied with the new American rule, which created tensions. While traveling to his hometown of Taos, New Mexico, without military protection, he was attacked by Pueblo Indians under the orders of Mexican conspirators and murdered at age 47.
