On April 22, 1934, he killed Special Agent W. Carter Baum during the shootout at the Little Bohemia Lodge in Manitowish Waters, Wisconsin.
His criminal journey came to a violent conclusion near Barrington, Illinois, in a shootout with two Federal Agents, Samuel Cowley and Herman Hollis. Both agents had indeed been present at the Biograph Theatre when Dillinger was killed. They encountered Nelson, his wife Helen, and fellow gang member John Paul Chase on the road in a stolen vehicle and initiated a pursuit. In the ensuing firefight, both agents lost their lives, though not before inflicting mortal wounds on Nelson. He passed away approximately five hours later, beside his wife, Helen.
The next day, an anonymous call led to the discovery of Nelson's body, wrapped in a blanket, in a roadside ditch near a cemetery near Niles Center.
