Lady Mary Howard, Duchess of Richmond and Somerset

Mary was the second daughter of Thomas Howard, the 3rd Duke of Norfolk and his second wife, Lady Elizabeth Stafford. Granddaughter of Thomas Howard, 2nd Duke of Norfolk and Elizabeth Tilney, Edward Stafford, 3rd Duke of Buckingham, and Eleanor Percy. She was a direct descendant of King Edward III, and born in the aftermath of troubled times when both her grandfather and great grandfather had been executed for treason. Her father was the second most senior noble in England, her grandfather the most senior. She was also the first cousin of the Queen of England, Catherine Howard, the fifth wife of Henry VIII.

After her grandfather was executed, her father was one of the two remaining dukes in the kingdom until in 1525 when King Henry VIII appointed his six year old illegitimate son, Henry FitzRoy to the Duke of Richmond and Somerset. Henry had been under the care of Thomas Wolsey until he fell to the King's disfavor, then Henry was sent to Thomas Howard's care. When Henry turned fifteen, he and Howard's second daughter, Lady Mary, just fourteen, were married in 1533.

Henry would die from consumption in two years, leaving Mary at a virgin (as it is believed the marriage was never consummated) and at a total loss from lands that would normally be granted to her as a widow. She would remain at court, close friends with the king's niece, Margaret Douglas, and one of his mistresses, Mary Shelton. Lady Mary and Margaret were appointed to meet Henry's fourth wife, Anne of Cleves, at Calais in 1540.

When Catherine Howard was accused of adultery in 1541, Mary and her entire family briefly were sent to the Tower of London. Her father petitioned her to marry Thomas Seymour, the 1st Baron Seymour, and while the King approved, Mary and her brother, the Earl of Surrey protested, and the marriage contract was never written.

Surrey proposed his sister become the old King's mistress in order to obtain favors and influence. Mary flew at him in a rage, and later testified against him, resulting in his execution for treason.

Mary left court soon after Henry VIII's death in 1547, the remainder of her life was quiet, until her death at age thirty-eight, during the reign of her half-sister-in-law, Queen Mary I.
