Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He entered the Union Army on October 15, 1861, when at the age of 24 he was mustered in as a Private in Company A, 5th New York Volunteer Cavalry. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery in action on June 30, 1863 at Hanover, Pennsylvania. His citation reads simply "Capture of battle flag." Honorably mustered out of service on October 15, 1864, he was awarded the Medal on February 11, 1878.
