The white obelisk is completely eroded and illegible except for the name EDWARDS. Among others, it memorializes William Edwards (died 1851). Just to its right is the footstone of Rebecca Edwards (died 1857).

William Edwards (1770–1851) was an American inventor, grandson of Jonathan Edwards, the elder. He was born in Elizabethtown, New Jersey. He introduced a valuable improvement in the manufacture of leather, whereby tanning was accomplished in a quarter of the usual time. He invented machines which greatly advanced the production of leather in America. This article incorporates text from an edition of the New International Encyclopedia that is in the public domain.

Note: Merchant, who in 1770 ? moved to Stockbridge, Massachusetts, where he was judge of the probate court of Berkshire. He was a practical tanner and located his first tannery at Northampton, Hampshire Co., MA, finding market for his leather in Boston. He invented a process by which three-fourths of the time consumed by European tanneries in preparing leather was saved. He removed in 1817 to the virgin hemlock forests of Greene Co., NY and erected a model tannery at Hunter on Schoharie creek on an estate of 1200 acres, the business being conducted by a stock company. In 1822, with his son and Jacob Lorillard, he purchased the land from the company, greatly enlarged the plant, invented and introduced improved machinery by which the available water-power was used in place of manual labor.
