Royal House of Piedmont and Sardinia. Mary Caroline was born as the fourth-born daughter of Amedeo III of the Savoy dynasty and of Maria Antonia Fernanda di Borbone. Thanks to an arranged marriage she married (1781) Prince Antony Clement, Elector of Saxony. Little is known about her life at the German court due to her short stay. Historians assert that the princess lived with great nostalgia the estrangement from her original homeland, remaining on the sidelines of court activities despite being treated affectionately by her new relatives. Mary Caroline died suddenly of smallpox despite prompt treatment by the Dresden physicians.
