Ruth was born in Illinois on August 4, 1930, the daughter of Wendell and Maud (Ranney) Tallmadge. She was a graduate of Seneca High School and Stevens Point State Teachers College (now The University of Wisconsin- Stevens Point) where she met Lewis T. Mittness while she was working in the library and he asked her how to spell a word. She and Lew were married on June 12, 1954, in Stevens Point, and he preceded her in death on May 27, 2006. Ruth and Lew owned and operated the Dairy Queen in Evansville and a trailer park in Janesville, and she managed the candy department at Gimbels when they lived in Madison. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Janesville, where she at one time played in the hand bell choir. Ruth loved singing harmony by ear, gardening, and writing humorous poetry which she enjoyed sharing with others. She was also an avid baker and bowler. She was a member of the Democratic Party, the Auxiliary of the VFW, and she supported many organizations, including the Girl Scouts and the UW football team. Ruth devoted her life to her late husband Lew's political career and to raising their 2 families. Following the tragic early death of her daughter, Julie Mittness, she and Lew raised her 2 grandchildren, Nichole and Josh. Ruth passed away at the age of 81 at Cedar Crest.
