Professional Golfer. He was an American golfer who was the winner of the 1948 Masters tournament. Club Professional Claude Harmon stunned the golfing world by winning the 12th Masters in record-tying fashion. His three rounds of 70, combined with a third-round 69 gave him a five-stroke victory over Cary Middlecoff and a winner's check of $2,500. After the victory, Harmon returned to Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, New York, to resume his duties as a head pro. He qualified for the US Amateur at age 15. Playing in the Masters from 1946 to 1969, he placed tenth in 1959. Harmon also finished tied for third in the 1959 U.S. Open, which was held on his home course at Winged Foot. He is a member of the World Golf Teachers' Hall of Fame and the PGA of America Hall of Fame. He died of a heart attack at age 73 as a complication of surgery. His four sons Butch, Craig, Bill, and Dick successfully followed in his footsteps into the golf profession.
