A 1908 Caledonia High School graduate, Jim played left guard on the basketball team, catcher for the baseball team, and right tackle on the football team. His high school nickname was "Cyclone Jim" [1908 Caledonia High School Yearbook]. In the 1910 U.S. Census, he was enumerated with his parents and family at Caledonia.

Jim and Leora divorced before July 1916 and their son, James William, was raised by Leora and her parents at Benton, Herrin, and West Frankfort, all in southern Illinois. Leora retired as a hospital administrator at Alton Memorial Hospital in 1967 at age 75.
