She was born in Hochst-Nieid, Frankfort, Germanyto Heinrich Ichstadt and Meta L. Metzkat.
Her parents were divorced when she was a very small child. At the start of the war she was sent into the eastern part of Germany to reside with relatives to get away from the city of Frankfort. Her mother was informed by some of the German soldiers who came to the restaurant where she worked that the Russians were starting to get very close to the area where Marianne was staying and their advice to her was to go retrieve her, as they felt she would be safer in Frankfurt than where she was when the Russians came to that area of Germany.
After Skaggs tour of duy ended she naturally returned home with him and would eventually end up in Portland, Oregon.
