Maggie's 25-year-old daughter, Michele, disappeared in September, 1974, in Gunnison, Colorado, where she had been hiking and taking pictures. As the days turned into weeks without word from Michele, Maggie was convinced her daughter was dead. One night about 6 weeks after Michele disappeared, Maggie took an overdose of barbiturates and died in her sleep. She left a note telling her husband, George, that she had gone to heaven to be with Michele and that if Michele's body was ever recovered, to please bury her next to her. On August 8, 1992, Michele's remains were finally found. Roy Melanson was tried and convicted in her murder. Michele was cremated and her ashes were interred in Maggie's grave as she had requested.
