BANGOR – James "Jim" Alden Boardman, 97, died unexpectedly Jan. 15, 2012, at a Bangor hospital. He was born in Orono, the son of Harold S. and Nellie F. (Mann) Boardman.

After Jim graduated from Orono High School he attended Cushing Academy, Ashburnham, Mass., for one year so that his younger sister, Rosemary, could enter the university in the same class. Jim graduated from the University of Maine with a degree in engineering in 1936.

On Dec. 2, 1940, he married Avis A. Alexander in Fairfield. Of this marriage a son, James "Alec" Alexander Boardman, was born. Jim was employed by Maine State Highway Department, Central Maine Power and Keyes Fibre Co. for 35 years, from which he retired in 1976 and they moved to their house in Scottsdale, Ariz., where he became an avid golfer. Jim and Avis returned to Maine each summer to Hancock Point.

In his 20s Jim took up Alpine skiing after the thrill of his first venture on skis, going down the carriage road at Mount Washington. Many winter weekends found him in New Hampshire at Cannon Mountain and at Tuckerman Ravine into late spring. As Sugarloaf developed he and Alec had season tickets. Jim was a quiet man with a good logical mind. Commonly heard in his household was "ask him, he will know the correct answer." He maintained that he was a good listener. He had a good sense of humor and enjoyed many friends. He was a very good host.

Jim was member of Pleasant Street United Methodist Church, Waterville, and United Methodist Church, Scottsdale, Ariz. Jim served on the board of Keyes Fibre Credit Union and spent eight years on Waterville Board of Education. He was a member of Waterville Lodge No. 33 AF & AM, Hiram Lodge No. 73 AF & AM, Phoenix, and Kora Shriners.

In 1983 Avis died and Jim subsequently married her sister, Beverly, who survives him. He is also survived by his son, Alec and his wife, Mary (Cameron), of Cape Elizabeth; granddaughter, Bethany Emery of South Portland; great-grandson, Nathan Emery; grandson, Jeffrey Boardman of Wilmington, N.C.; great-granddaughter, Amelia Boardman; and one cousin, Priscilla (Gray) Walker of Longview, Wash.

Services will be private. Jim's ashes will be interred at Mount Hope Cemetery, Bangor. (Bangor Daily News posted 1/17/20112)
