Connecticut Co. official succumbs to illness after two operations

Victor Stewart Curtis, for a number of years traffic manager of the Connecticut Co. and secretary of the board of directors, died at the Bridgeport Hospital last night at 9:30 o'clock. Mr. Curtis was taken suddenly ill at a Rotary club dinner at New Haven Wednesday and was operated on Thursday and Saturday by Dr. Daniel C. Patterson.

The funeral will be held from the Read Memorial Chapel North Ave., Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Reverend William Poorest Day of the United Congregational church will officiate. Burial will be in Mountain Grove Cemetery.

Victor Curtis was born in New Haven October 12, 1872 the son of John C and Adaline Stuart Curtis and spent the greater part of his life in this city. His father was a prominent member of the Grand Army of the Republic and was one of the very few men in this section who was awarded the Congressional medal for bravery in action. For a great many years and up till his death, he was superintendent of the Adams Express Co. in this territory.

After graduating from Bridgeport High School, Victor joined his father in the express management in this city and later became manager of the Bridgeport office. In 1904 he went to New Haven and became manager of the Adams express company in that city. When the American Express Co. took over the railroad express business, Mr. Curtis joined the New Haven railroad official force and two years later became associated with the Connecticut Co. and has been one of the executive officers since.

Mr. Curtis married Miss Hawley, a daughter of Frederick B. Hawley. For the past six years he lived on Gulf Rd., Milford. Besides his wife he is survived by a daughter Mrs. E. C. Griffing of New Haven, a granddaughter, three brothers and three sisters: Henry S. of New York City, Elliot R. of this city and John K Curtis of Sheron, Mass, Miss Vera Curtis, the operatic singer, Mrs. James G. Berrian, Bronxville, New York and Mrs. Lewis Maugham of this city.
