Count Basie's Mother Expires

Red Bank Woman Was Visiting Noted Son

Mrs. Lillie Basie, mother of Count Basie, celebrated Negro orchestra leader, died this morning at the latter's home on Edgecomb avenue, New York city. She had been visiting her son at the time.

Mrs. Basie, with her husband, Harvey Basie, superintendent of the Whitfield building on Broad street, resided on Mechanic street. Count Basie, born and raised at red Bank, was an only child.

The popular dance orchestra leader was very fond of his mother and when appearing on radio programs as guest artist invariably spent a great deal of time in discussing her and his home life. She had been in poor health for the past two years.

The body will be removed today to the F. Leon Harris funeral home on Shrewsbury avenue and prepared for burial Funeral arrangements will be completed today.
