Professional Boxer. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he was dubbed "Lefty Lew" and was one of the greatest southpaws in ring history. He fought his first professional fight in 1913, at age 15 and went on to fight in four weight classes, including seven world champions. He defeated the two top contenders for the Welterweight Championship and in 1924, he battled Mickey Walker for the World Welterweight crown, losing a 10-round decision. In 1928, he finished his career with a record of 172 bouts, 135 wins, 39 by knockouts, 9 draws and 15 lost. He is a member of the World Boxing Hall of Fame, the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame, the Philadelphia Jewish Sports Hall of Fame, and the International Boxing Hall of Fame. He died at the age 72.
