Ambassador, Journalist. He was a publisher, editor, and owner of the newspaper "Pittsburgh Leader," yet gained more fame as the fourth husband of stage actress Lillian Russell. Becoming political, he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention from Pennsylvania in 1916. He and Russell had a happy nine-year marriage before her death in 1922. After leaving the newspaper business in 1923, he served as an ambassador twice: to Spain from May 16, 1923 to December 20, 1925 and to Peru from June 11, 1928 to July 10, 1929. As the Ambassador to Peru, he played a significant role in negotiating the Tacna-Arica boundary agreement, settling a border dispute between Peru and Chile. He was appointed to these posts by United States Presidents Coolidge, Harding and Hoover. He was appointed ambassador to Poland shortly before his death, never taking the oath of office. He was played by the actor Henry Fonda in the 1940 Fox film "Lillian Russell." He is buried in the mausoleum that he had built for his wife, but his initials on the door are the only external indication that he is resting there as her name is the headline for the site.
