Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Sergeant in the Union Army in Company E, 126th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action on April 3, 1865 at Petersburg, Virginia. His citation reads, "Capture of flag." He also received the Ohio Medal of Honor and was inducted into the Ohio Military Hall of Fame on May 20, 2019. His descendants accepted the medal at a ceremony in Columbus, Ohio. He was among the few who received two medals for their bravery.
