His mother died in the great flu epidemic when Charles was only 11 months old. Then his father, Charles, Sr. died when he was about 10 years old. Subsequently Charles was raised by his Uncle Charles "Dick" Abbott, brother of his mother, and his grandmother Hannah Mariah Focht Abbot in the Lima, Ohio area.
Charles enlisted in the U.S. Army in early 1942, a few months after his grandmother's death and served the remainder of WWII. He achieved the rank of Tech 5 equal to and addressed as Corporal. After the war he married Emma Ruth McCloy of Perry County.
