French Royalty. Marie Adélaïde of Savoy, eldest daughter of Victor Amadeus II, Duke of Savoy, and his wife Anne Marie d'Orléans, was born at the Royal Pace of Turin, Savoy. Her marriage to Louis of France was the result of the signing of the Treaty of Turin in 1696. When she arrived in France in 1696, her marriage was delayed due to her extreme youth and the desire to further her education. On her twelfth birthday, the princess and the Duke of Burgundy were married in the Palace of Versailles. The new Duchess was apparently a favorite at the court of Louis XIV. She gave birth to three sons. The first died as an infant in 1704. She had two more sons, in 1707 and 1710. Only her youngest son survived to adulthood, and became King Louis XV of France. The Duchess contracted measles in February 1712 and died at Versailles. Despite moving to Marly to avoid the spread of infection, the royal family lost two more members. Her husband died six days after losing her, and their son died from measles the following month. Their youngest son contracted measles as well, but was spared. The Duchess and Duke of Burgundy were buried together on February 23, 1712.
