Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. He entered the Confederate service as a Major on the staff of General Cheatham and was promoted Lieutenant Colonel of the 15th Tennessee in early 1862. He commanded at the Battle of Shiloh, was promoted Colonel and led with distinction in all the engagements of the Southwest. At Missionary Ridge in 1863, he was wounded losing a leg and after recovering, he was sent to Georgia, at the rank of Brigadier General. The disabled Tyler was posted in command of Fort Tyler, West Point, to set defenses for the city and to protect vital transportation bridges. On the morning of April 16, 1865, Union Cavalry moved on West Point, placed artillery batteries on a nearby hill and opening fire on the fort. While defending the garrison during the Battle of West Point, Brigadier General Tyler was killed. He was the last
