Written by Jean Evans Blomgren:
My hopes for a sister continued after my Grandfather, Herbert L Evans passed away when I was 9 years old. My family was Mother Gladys Marie Evans, Grandmother Amelia (Meme) Evans and Aunt Beatrice (Bebe) Evans. My Aunt came home occasionally from her teaching position in another town.

I knew my Mother and Grandmother had put in a request for a little girl in an orphanage in Denver. I remember they put in a request for a blue eyed blond. The Director said what's wrong it seems everyone wants a blue eyed blond.

On Sunday when there was an open house at the orphanage in Denver my Mother, Grandmother and I went to see the children. There were a lot of people there looking over the children. I saw this darling little girl sitting in a crib. Brown eyes, light brown hair with curls at the back of her neck. I asked my folks can we have her? Isn't she a darling? She is so cute, I wish I could have her for my sister. They told us she had already been spoken for. Two weeks later they called my Mother and the people brought her back because she cried so much. So they said we could have her. My Mother worked and my Grandmother was in bed as she just had her tonsils out. Mother said alright we will come and get her.

Mother and I went to the orphanage to get her and there was June sitting on the floor facing the cupboards and eating a cracker. She was wearing a slip and had on patent leather shoes. I can't remember her having many clothes. I was so very happy. At last I had a little sister. When we brought her home many friends came over to see her.

She did cry a lot the first couple of weeks. Just wandered around the house sadly going a-hing, a-hing. Is it any wonder she cried. Her mother had to give her up when she was 16 months old because she couldn't take care of her. Then the other people brought her back. We just loved her so very much she soon fit into the family.

I really don't know anything about her Mother
or heritage. I know her name was June Marie Smith so only her last name was changed. I know her Mother and her family came from Leadville, Colo high in the Rocky Mtns. I think once we went there to look the family up but I don't remember any more than that.
