Howard Edward Townsend, 78, formerly of Peru, IN. passed away at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, Florida at 6 a.m. on Sunday April 4, 2004 of Hypertensive cardiovascular disease. He was the son of the late William Dewey Townsend and Esther C. See Townsend, both of Peru, Indiana.

He had served in the United States Army during World War II. He enjoyed working on gasoline and diesel motors and was a retired carpet layer. He was married to Ruth Maxine Clelland on November 20, 1953, and they had 12 children together: Michael James, Howard Edward Townsend, Jr. (died in infancy) Robin Elaine, Jacqueline Elaine, Howard Nathan, Robert Eugene, Thomas Nelson, Felicia Elaine, Jon Warren, Edward Dundee, Clayton (who died after birth), and Penny Townsend (stillborn about 1971) before Ruth's untimely death during childbirth of their 13th child (who was stillborn). Also, nephew Ross Hartleroad.

Siblings include: George A. Townsend, Maxine Townsend, Mary Townsend Cundiff, Jane Ann Townsend, Esther Townsend Russell, Kay Francis Townsend, and Susie Townsend Hughes.

He was cremated by the Southeastern Crematory in Pensacola, Florida. A private service will be conducted Wednesday April 28 at 11 a.m. at Marion National Cemetery, Marion IN.

There is no visitation.

Arrangements are being handled by Flower - Leedy in Peru, Indiana. The arrangements for Florida to Indiana was handled by the Trahan Mortuary Services, Inc 419 Yoakum Count, Pensacola, Florida.

He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.
