French Nobility, Military Commander. Legitimized son of the King Louis XIV. He was born to Louis and his mistress Madame de Montespan at the Château de Clagny in the town of Versailles. Legitimized in 1681, he was awarded the title of Count of Toulouse. It was the first of many he would receive. He became commander of the Royal Armies in 1697. The Count was knighted in 1693 and 1704. He commanded the French fleet at the Battle of Málaga in 1704, during the War of the Spanish Succession. In 1714, before the death of his father, he received the title of Grand Huntsman of France. Louis Alexandre also became Minister of the Navy. In 1717, Fort Toulouse in North America was erected in his honor. The Count of Toulouse married Marie Victoire de Noailles on February 2, 1723. He fathered one child from that marriage. He died at the Château de Rambouillet in 1737. Initially, he was buried in Saint-Lubin Church. However, in 1783, his remains, as well as the remains of other family members, were transferred by his son to the chapel of the Collégiale Saint-Étienne de Dreux. This was desecrated in 1793 and the bodies of ten family members thrown in a mass grave at the Chanoines cemetery of the Collégiale Saint-Étienne. In 1816, his granddaughter Louise Marie Adélaïde de Bourbon, Duchess of Orléans, had a new chapel built at the site of the mass grave. In 1830, her son Louis-Philippe I, King of the French, made improvements to the chapel and had it renamed the Chapelle Royale de Dreux. (bio by: Anne Philbrick)
