Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He was a railroad builder, professor and civil engineer. He was a graduate of Norwich University and head of the college's military department. He was made First Lieutenant in the 15th Illinois Volunteer Infantry and then Colonel of the 58th United States Colored Troops. He then made Breveted Brigadier General in 1865. Soon after the war, President Grant appointed him to the position of United States Internal Revenue Collector of Mississippi. He lived to almost one hundred years of age.
