Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He was brevetted first lieutenant of the Second Dragoons for his gallant and meritorious service in Texas during the Mexican War, May 9, 1846. He was then promoted to First Lieutenant of the First Dragoons on December 27, 1848. He was promoted major of the First Cavalry during the Civil War on January 1, 1861 and served on the staff joining the Army of the Potomac. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel of the Fifth Cavalry, May 3, 1865. He became a Colonel and Inspector General, October 1, 1861 and remained that rank until the end of the war. He was then promoted Brigadier General in 1881, and became head of the Inspector General's Department.
