French Nobility. Philippine Élisabeth Charlotte d'Orléans, daughter of Philippe d'Orléans, Duke of Orléans and Regent for Louis XV, and his wife Françoise Marie de Bourbon, was born at the Palace of Versailles. She was the sixth daughter and seventh child of the marriage. She and her younger sister Louise Diane, granddaughters of Louis XIV, were both raised in a convent. A marriage was arranged between Philippine and Carlos, the son of King Philip V of Spain. The eleven-year-old received a warm reception upon her arrival in Madrid in 1726. The children were apparently quite smitten with each other. However, in 1728, the engagement was dissolved for political reasons and Philippine returned to France. In 1731, the young couple again attempted to marry, but could not obtain consent due to international politics. 1733 marked the onset of the War of the Polish Succession. It resulted in Carlos becoming King of the Two Sicilies. Later, he became King of Spain. However, Philippine never lived to see her love become king. In 1734, while living in Paris, the nineteen-year-old died of smallpox. She was interred at the Val-de-Grâce convent on May 22, 1734.
