Herbert Wenthold, age 81, of Calmar, IA died Tuesday, March 7, 2000, at the New Hampton Care Center following a lengthy illness.

A funeral mass was held Friday, March 10, at 11 a.m., at Our Lady of Seven Dolor Catholic Church in Festina, IA with the Rev. Msgr. Cletus Hawes officiating.

Alan Sensor was the organist. The choir of Our Lady of Seven Dolors, Mollie Busta and Jim Busta provided vocal music. Hymns were "Be Not Afraid," "On Eagles Wings," "Only A Shadow," "Song of Farewell" and "How Great Thou Art."

Petitions were by Kristie Bohr and Lisa Busta, with the presentation of gifts by Jessica Bohr, Becky Wenthold, Sarah Wenthold and Terra Wenthold.

Larry Wenthold gave the eulogy. Ushers were Mike and Steve Einck. Lectors were Larry and Terry Wenthold and Julie Buddenberg.

Eucharistic minister was Steve Einck. Servers were Darin Einck, Landon Einck and Jake Wenthold.

Casket bearers were grandsons Jeff and Kevin Bohr, Chad and Jason Busta, Andy and Josh Wenthold, and Joel and Ryan Wenthold.

Honorary bearers were grandsons Keith Sbiral, David and Jonathan Wenthold, and Jake Wenthold.

Interment was at the Our Lady of Seven Dolors Cemetery, Festina. The French Funeral Home in Calmar handled arrangements.

Herb was born Sept, 9, 1918, near Festina, IA, the son of John and Anna (nee Busch) Wenthold. He attended St. Mary's Catholic School in Festina through grade eight.

He worked on the farm for several years before he married Mildred Einck on Sept. 29,1943. They had five children.

Mildred died Nov. 18,1960.

On June 26, 1971, Herb married Helen (Barloon) Bodensteiner in Festina. After living a few more years on the farm, they moved to Calmar in 1975.

After retiring from the farm, Herb worked for Farm Service for 10 years. He enjoyed polka music, playing cards, woodworking and working on his son's farm. He received the Pioneer Dairyman Award in 1985.

In 1987, Herb had a stroke which caused major paralysis of the right side of his body and also impaired his speech. He continued to enjoy polka music, Cubs baseball, car rides in the country, and his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Wenthold of Calmar; two daughters, Shirley (LeRoy) Bohr of Ossian, and Mary Lou (Jim) Busta of Spring Grove, MN.; two sons, Terry (Mary Ann) Wenthold of Fort Atkinson, and Larry (Sandra) Wenthold of Atkinson, IA; one step-daughter, Norma Wikon of Cedar Rapids; and one step-son, Robert Sbiral of Spillville.

There are 20 grandchildren: Jeff (Brenda) Bohr, Julie (Bruce) Buddenberg, Kristie, Kevin and Jessica Bohr, Lisa, Chad, Mollie and Jason Busta, Josh, Andy, Sarah, Becky, Jonathan, David, Joel, Ryan, Jake and Terra Wenthold, and Keith Sbiral.

Also surviving are five great grandchildren, Chanse, Cassidy and Josie Buddenberg, Kai Becker and Jenna Bohr; two sisters, Ruth (Arnold) Bodensteiner of Lawler, and Julitta (Alois) Meyer of Marion; and two sisters-in-law, Evelyn and Mary Wenthold, both of Ossian.

Herbert Wenthold was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Mildred; one son, Kenneth Wenthold, who died Nov. 28, 1947; two sisters, Mathilda Kleve and Mary Kleve; and four brothers, Albert, Felix, Leo and Alois Wenthold.
