Mrs. Cora M. Hodge Van
Voast, 91, of 541 Davidson
street, widow of George H.
VanVoast, died at 5:25 Tuesday
afternoon in the Ryan
Nursing home, 518 Pine
street, where she had been a
patient since Oct. 30. Death
was attributed chiefly to infirmities
of old age.
Only nieces and nephews
survive,
Her husband, who was a
mason by trade, died at the
same nursing home on April
13, 1967 at the age of 95.
Mrs. VanVoast who was
prominent in the Women's
Christian Temperance, unit
having headed both the Watertown
and Jefferson county
organizations for years
until 1963, was transferred
to the nursing home from
the House of the Good Sa
maritan.
She had been admitted to
the hospital Oct. 8 after fracturing
her right hip in a fall
at her home. While in the
hospital, she was treated not
only for the fractured hip,
but also underwent major
surgery Oct. 9.
She was born July 8, 1877
in the town of Rutland, a
mile south of Tylerville, and
was the last survivor of a
family of eleven children of
Henry and Clarinda Stoddard
Hodge.
She attended district and
village schools and at the
age of 16 taught school.
Later, she attended the Carthage
High school and was
graduated from the Carthage
teachers' t r a i n i ng
class.
Subsequently, she taught
in rural schools in Jefferson,
Lewis, Herkimer and Oswego
counties.
She was married to George
H. VanVoast of Herkimer
county on Aug. 9, 1899, in
Watertown. She continued
her teaching career for a
number of years thereafter.
In 1905 Mr. and Mrs: Van
Voast purchased the Davidson
street home and she had
since lived there. They came
to Watertown more than 68
years ago.
Mrs. VanVoast became an
active member of the W.C.T.
U. in 1913, was later secretary
of Watertown unit,
served as president of the local
unit from 1932 until 1942
and was president of the
county unit from 1942 until
1963.
In 1942 she was chosen
treasurer of the Stewart fund
of the W.C.T.U. -a fund left
by Aurelia Stewart—and had
charge of it until 1963.
Mrs. VanVoast was a member
of the Bethany Methodist
church.
The funeral will be Thursday
afternoon at 2 at the
Simpson funeral home. Burial
will be in the South Rutland
cemetery.
Friends may call at the
funeral home tonight from
7 to 9.
