William Joseph McGuigan
Birth: Jul. 18, 1853
Death: Dec. 25, 1908

Vancouver Mayor. Dr. McGuigan arrived in Vancouver in 1885 and was one of the signatories on the petition for Incorporation. His first office was a tobacco store owned by Jack Levy on the North side Cordova Street between Carrall and Abbott. William Joseph McGuigan was born at North Easthope, near Stratford, Perth Co., Ontario, the eldest son of Michael McGuigan, a native of Castle Dawson, Co. Derry, Ireland, and Bridget Quinliven. He obtained his secondary schooling at Stratford High School and Galt Collegiate Institute. He entered McGill University and graduated from the Medical School with Honors (M.D. C.M.) in 1879. While at McGill he was Editor-in-Chief of the "Gazette". His professional career before settling in Vancouver was varied. His first appointment was with the Grand Trunk Railway at Sarnia as a surgeon. He registered with the M.C.P. & S. of Ontario in 1880. He spent five years in London, Ontario, as a physician at Ontario. His health brought him west in 1885, visiting various places in Manitoba and the Territories. He met his brother Thomas F. McGuigan at Donald (near Revelstoke) B.C., where he filled in for a time as Chief Medical Superintendent of the Mountain
Division of the C.P.R. With the completion of the railway, he moved on, to the West Coast, where he made the decision to stay in Granville. He registered with the Medical Council of B.C. on 24 August 1886. By 1888 he and his brother Thomas had been joined in Vancouver by a third brother, James McGuigan. Dr. William McGuigan never married. Dr. McGuigan's personal achievements in Vancouver are impressive. He was elected in the Medical Council of B.C. in 1887. In his profession, he served as Coroner, Medical Inspector of Indians, President of the Vancouver Medical Association, Secretary of the B.C. Medical Association and President of the B.C. Council of Physicians and Surgeons (1889). His civic contributions were many and varied. He was at one time President of the High School Board, a School Trustee, Chairman of the Free Library Board, and President of the Harrison Mining Co. He was an accomplished linguist, speaking French, German, Italian, Greek, and Spanish. He was a frequent contributor to the press on questions of the day and was a good speaker as well as vigorous writer. He served as an Alderman of the City of Vancouver from 1898 to 1903 and as Mayor of Vancouver in 1904. In 1903, just 5 years before his death, the "Vancouver World" described him as the "most titled man in Vancouver'. Dr. McGuigan died in St. Paul's Hospital, which we had helped to found, after being hospitalized there for two years. He is buried in the McGuigan family plot at Mountain View Cemetery.
