Swedish Monarch, Bielbo Dynasty. Born the second son of Birger Jarl and Princess Ingiburga, sister of Eric XI. He was designated heir to his father's duchy, while his elder brother, Waldemar, inherited the throne. He led a revolt against his brother and deposed him in 1275. In 1276, he married Haelwig, a daughter of Gerard I of Holstein with whom he had at least five children. His Decree of Adelsey (Alsnö) in 1279, established that anyone who provided the Crown with a mounted warrior and a warhorse, was exempt from certain taxes. This effort has been credited with being the foundation of the Swedish nobility. He instituted a royal advisory council, began a codification of laws, and promoted other reforms to strengthen royal authority. Possibly because he enacted legislation to protect farmers from bands of itinerants that were roving the countryside, he has been called Magnus Barnlock, in Swedish Magnus Ladulås. He founded the Riddarholm Church and was the first of the many kings and other royals to be interred there through to 1950.
