John joined for duty and enrolled on 09 Sep 1863 at Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia, for the period of "for the war." He first mustered in with the Confederate Army, Company A, Augusta Arsenal, 27th Battalion, on 11 Sep 1863 at Augusta, Georgia. We see him "Present" for the period of 11 Sep 1863 through 30 Jun 1864. John was elected 2nd Junior Lieutenant from 2nd Sergeant on 26 Jul 1864. We next find John "Absent Sick" with a 30 day furlough since 24 Oct 1864. He then is reported as absent without leave since 24 Nov 1864. The last report we have is that he was admitted to the CSA General Hospital, No 11, at Charlotte, North Carolina, on 20 Apr 1865, and returned to duty on 21 Apr 1865.
