British Victoria Cross recipient. John Freeman was born in Sittingbourne, in Kent. During the Indian Mutiny, he served as a Private in the 9th. Lancers (Queen's Royal). On the 10th. October 1857 at Agra, he went to the assistance of a lieutenant who had been shot. He killed the leader of the enemy's cavalry, and defended the lieutenant against several of the enemy.
