2nd Boer War Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Wimbledon, England, he served as a Lieutenant and Adjutant in the 1st Battalion, The King's Own Scottish Borderers. At Lambrechtfontein, South Africa, on May 18, 1901, was in command of a rear-guard unit. Seeing a Trooper from the 7th Mounted Infantry, dismounted, after his horse having been shot, Lieutenant Coulson remained behind and took him up on his own horse. He rode a short distance, when his horse was shot and both Lieutenant Coulson and the Trooper were brought to the ground. Lieutenant Coulson told the Trooper to get along with the wounded horse as best he could and he would work himself back on foot. The Trooper rode forward to the column of the 7th Mounted Infantry and seeing Lieutenant Coulson position of danger, they rode back to through enemy fire. They took him up on a horse and Lieutenant Coulson was fatally wounded. For gallantry under fire, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross on August 8, 1902.
