John A. Kirkham was born to Irish/English parents in Ireland. He immigrated to the United States in the mid to late 1880's. He married the widow Eleanor Hurst sometime after 1902? and became the step-father for her two boys. They moved to Oregon where he worked as a real estate salesman. After the first World War, they all reunited in East Ely, Nevada where he worked at the Nevada Consolidated Copper Company in the copper scrap business along with his step-son Lloyd.
