South Carolina Governor. After graduating from The Citadel South Carolina, in 1942, he served as a Major intelligence officer, in the U.S. Army, assigned to stateside duty during World War II. After the war, he received a law degree from the University of South Carolina in 1948, was admitted to the bar, was a part-time political science instructor at the University of South Carolina and practiced law in Furman, South Carolina, (1948-70). He also was the South Carolina Highway Commissioner, (1948-52), a South Carolina State Senator, (1954-66) and the 80th Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina (1966-1971). In 1971, he was elected as a Democrat the 109th Governor of South Carolina, serving until 1975. After leaving off, he was appointed President Jimmy Carter the U.S. Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, (1977-81). Returning to America, he was a professor of Middle East Studies at the University of South Carolina, until his until his death from cancer.
