Clyde Phillips was a successful trainer and owner of Thoroughbred racehorses competing at racetracks across the United States, Canada and in Tijuana, Mexico. The son of a trainer, Phillips grew up in the business and obtained his license while in his early twenties. During a career that spanned more than thirty years, he race-conditioned horses for himself as well as those belonging to some of the top owners in the sport including actor and dancer Fred Astaire, insurance executive William R. Coe, Royal Baking Powder Co. president, William Ziegler, Jr., as well as Helen Hay Whitney's Greentree Stable, one of the great stables in the history of Thoroughbred racing in the United States.
