Marion was born August 24, 1895, in Canfield, Ohio, to Allora and Anna (Kelly) Shields. On March 29, 1914, she married William Morgan "Billy" DeBeck in Youngstown, Ohio. He was a cartoonist who created the "Barney Google" comic strip. This marriage ended in divorce. She then married boxer Fidel LaBarba on April 21, 1928, in San Francisco, California. They divorced in 1934. On May 7, 1942, she was married for the last time to actor Charlie Ruggles in Las Vegas, Nevada. Charlie and Marion shared a love of animals. At one point during their marriage, they had over 90 pets. In 1959, she was a guest on the "This Is Your Life" episode honoring Charlie. They remained married until his death in 1970. Marion died on February 19, 1978, in Santa Monica, California.
