British Victoria Cross recipient. According to some accounts, Robert Grant was born in Harrogate, Yorkshire; other sources give his birthplace as Stepney, East London. During the Indian Mutiny of 1857, he was serving as a Sergeant with the 1st. Battalion of the 5th. Regiment (now known as the Northumberland Fusiliers.) On the 24th. September that year, at Alumbagh, he went, under very heavy fire, to rescue a soldier named Private E. Deveney, whose leg had been shot; and, with the assistance of his Lieutenant (name of Brown), succeeded in carrying him back to safety. Sergeant Grant went on to serve as a police constable with "Y" Division, and died in Islington, North London, at the early age of 37. His Victoria Cross is on display at the Fusiliers Museum in Alnwick, Northumberland. Unfortunately, he was buried in a common grave which has no marker, and a pathway has been built over it.
